Cholesterol wake up
I had my cholesterol level and blood pressure checked last week. It was one of those things where I just happened across a stall ofering to take the readings and figured it was a good idea. They didn't bundle me into an ambulance and rush me to hospital, but the results weren't great. My blood pressure is okay- 130/84- but my cholesterol levels are high. Total cholesterol is 7.37 mmol/l (anything over 5 mmol/l is considered a bad level), of which 5.12 mmol/l is "bad" LDL cholesterol and "good" HDL cholesterol is 0.95 mmol/l. I guess this is a legacy of bad behaviour in the nineties and early noughties that recent healthy eating hasn't managed to counteract.
So starting now I'm trying to cut the cholesterol in my diet, get more exercise and eat more oily fish. I'll be off to the doctor to get some more detailed advice. I'll be recording progress and trying to build up a good tasting low cholesterol diet.
Clare had the same checks. Her total cholesterol is 3.67 mmol/l, with LDL cholesterol at 1.8 mmol/l and HDL cholesterol at 1.54 mmol/l. Her blood pressure, however, is a bit high at 135/87, so that's what she's going to work on.
