What's in your pint?

The Government is backing European Union proposals to force drinks companies to reveal hidden chemicals used in beer and wine. This can only be a good thing. At casa Spinneyhead we've been worried in recent months about some of the additives that could be in red wine, in particular, but not listed on the label. E129, also known as Allura Red is embargoed because of worries about side effects, and it might be used to give reds a deeper colour.

Iain Loe, research and information manager for the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), said most brewers were happy to list all their ingredients. Chemicals were most likely to be found in packaged or keg beer and were generally not used by small real ale brewers.
