Soya contraceptive
It's not a good week for making babies. First there was the announcement of a coming "infertility timebomb" fuelled by the trend of later motherhood, obesity and STDs. Now it turns out that the vegan's friend, soya, could impair the performance of sperm. Even a small amount in a woman's bloodstream can trigger sperm to produce a signalling molecule called cyclic AMP which is supposed to kick in as the tadpoles near the egg. naturally this leads to them burning out too early. The culprit in soya is a compound called genistein, a weak oestrogen. Similar compounds can be found in hop based products- ie beer- which is even worse news.
